EN031 - Not your average run of the mill harsh noise. Hailing from American death metal's second home, Buffalo, New York, Menophilia brings that old school death metal kind of feel to this release without resorting to regurgitating the same boring old tired themes that have been done over and over and beaten to death again and again by self proclaimed "cavemen" who wear long sleeve shirts in 96 degree weather and circle jerk over who has the sickest riffs.

Instead the death metal influence here is more visually aesthetic than audial but it clashes nicely with the actual sound as intensely dark and punishing, relentless tidal waves of noise crash down over you.

This project is a breath of fresh air to harsh noise. In a world where essentially everything has been done musically (and especially the world of noise), I will most likely never use the term "groundbreaking" to describe a new release (of any kind) but breaking the mold is a term I can say describes MENOPHILIA's efforts accurately.

This is not harsh noise wall. This is harsh death noise.

Weirdly enough it reminds me of the serene ambient output of the band Emeralds, though noticeably starker in tone. The result is a strangely peaceful (dare I say familiar) feeling of quiet dread and homely nihilism. Deathbed Tapes may have harsher and superficially extreme output, but I'd be willing to bet few other releases are as atmospheric as this one. Don't overlook Rubber Nurse! Ben Harris
